Chairmen of all 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State have collectively filed a lawsuit against the state government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, over the funding and plans to construct two flyovers in the metropolis.
The legal action, supported by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, revolves around their dissatisfaction with the government’s plan to construct two flyovers.
The primary contention stems from the fact that 70% of the funding allocation for the ambitious flyover projects is sourced from the LGAs’ joint accounts.
The aggrieved chairmen, represented by ALGON, submitted the suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1733/2023) on December 29, 2023, to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Their plea seeks an order to restrain the state government from accessing or utilizing funds from the joint account.
The defendants in the case include the Kano State Government, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, and the Accountant General of the state.
Despite the legal challenge, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed unwavering confidence in the funding arrangement. During the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the flyovers on Friday evening, he defended the practice, asserting that it is a well-established tradition inherited from his predecessors.
The governor further assured that all LGAs would reap the benefits of the completed flyovers, remaining undisturbed by the legal opposition.
