The Kano Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has set substantial fees for candidates contesting in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 30.
According to KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi, candidates vying for chairmanship positions are required to pay N10 million, while those contesting for councillorship seats must pay N5 million.
This announcement was made during the presentation of election guidelines and the timetable to representatives of political parties at the commission’s headquarters.
Malumfashi emphasized that the payment is a mandatory qualification criterion for all aspirants. In addition to the financial requirements, the guidelines specify that chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, while councillorship candidates must be 25 years or older.
All candidates are also required to be card-carrying members of political parties, in good health, and must have at least a secondary school certificate.
The guidelines further prohibit candidates who are bankrupt, ex-convicts, drug addicts, or members of secret societies from contesting. Professor Malumfashi also warned political parties and candidates about the serious consequences of electoral malpractice, stating that anyone found guilty would face decisive action.
Campaigns for the Kano local government elections are set to begin on September 6 and will conclude on October 31. KANSIEC has issued strict instructions to ensure that the campaigns are peaceful and issue-based, with a focus on pressing societal problems such as poverty, infrastructure, and youth empowerment.
