Kenya’s IG of Police Resigns Amidst Deadly Crackdown on Protesters

Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, has tendered his resignation following a violent police response to anti-tax demonstrators that left over 40 dead.

The resignation of Mr. Koome was confirmed through a statement issued by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Friday, stating, “HIS EXCELLENCY William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, president and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, has, on this 12th day of July 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service.”

The abrupt resignation of Kenya’s top police official comes after the Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights reported 39 fatalities due to what they described as excessive use of force by law enforcement.
