The Nigerian government has officially designated the Bola Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, as an alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the inaugural flight ceremony of Overland Airways at the Minna airport.
Speaking at the event, Keyamo stated that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport has the necessary infrastructure and strategic location to serve as a reliable backup to the capital’s main airport, especially during emergencies or periods of high traffic.
“The runway is an international runway; a 747 and a triple 7 can use this runway. Why, over the years, this has been underutilised is still a puzzle,” Keyamo said.

He continued, “Our eyes are on this airport. By the powers conferred in me, I declare Minna Airport as the alternative to Abuja Airport. NCAA, FAAN, take note.”

“This is not just an airport,” Keyamo remarked. “It’s a symbol of new beginnings—for Minna, for Niger State, and for Nigeria’s aviation future.”
With its new designation, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport is expected to see increased federal investment in navigation aids, passenger terminals, and cargo handling capacity. The Ministry of Aviation also hinted at plans to attract international carriers and cargo operators to the airport in the near future.
