Kidnapping for ransom has emerged as the most frequently reported crime in Nigeria under Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, according to data released by StatiSense.
Citing 2023 statistics from Nigeria’s Ministry of Police Affairs, StatiSense shared this information on Thursday via its X account.
The data reveals that kidnapping has surpassed other crimes such as murder, banditry, terrorism, and armed robbery in terms of frequency.
A regional breakdown shows that kidnapping is the most reported crime in the North Central (38.51 percent), North East (42.11 percent), North West (49.71 percent), South East (30.61 percent), and South-South (36.73 percent) zones, with the South West being the exception.
Conversely, murder cases are reported as the most prevalent crime in the South West, accounting for 29.87 percent of crime reports.

This report highlights the persistent insecurity in Nigeria, despite President Tinubu’s promises to address the issue. In recent incidents, bandits attacked the Ushafa community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), killing a man named Mr. Felix Chuks and abducting his entire family.
Additionally, 20 medical students were kidnapped in Benue State last week but have since been released. In another case, 287 students were abducted from a government secondary school in Kuriga, Kaduna State.
