Aisha Yesufu, a prominent Nigerian activist, has condemned the alleged killing of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State students protesting insecurity, saying the act portrays the state government as ‘terrorists’.
Several students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, were reportedly killed and injured on Saturday when police and army personnel opened fire on them during a protest over worsening insecurity and recent kidnappings in the area.
The protesters said the demonstration was prompted by growing insecurity within Ekpoma, particularly around the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) community, which they claim has witnessed repeated abductions in recent weeks.
After embarking on the demonstration, a netizen raised alarm that the protesting students were being attacked and shared the incident on X describing how security forces stormed the protest and shot at students, leaving many wounded and others in critical condition.
Witnesses also said security operatives had begun arresting some of the students adjudged to have participated in the protest including those in university hostels.

The incident has since sparked outrage online, with human rights groups and students’ associations condemning the attack.
While many have called for an immediate investigation into the actions of the police and army, demanding accountability and stronger measures to protect students and residents from further violence, Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu described the act as unjust and a breach of trust on the path og the government.

Writing on X, the activist said, ‘’the Nigerian State cannot continue to kill its own! How are students that are protesting to be protected by government being killed by the same government? What then makes the government different from the terrorists/kidnappers that the students are protesting to be protected from? ‘’
‘’While students in other countries are getting the best of education in the most enabling environment our students are being killed both by terrorists/kidnappers and government.’’
