Drama unfolded in the Senate on Thursday as FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe stormed out of the chamber after being prevented from presenting a motion urging FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to halt demolitions in Abuja.
Although Senate President Godswill Akpabio had earlier approved her motion for Thursday’s plenary, it was excluded from the order paper, reportedly because the Senate Committee on Rules and Business had not received the draft.
Senator Titus Zam, Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Business, stated that his office did not receive the motion from Senator Kingibe. This led to an argument, during which Kingibe packed her belongings and exited the chamber in protest.
Efforts by other senators to calm the situation were successful after Akpabio insisted that Kingibe apologize for her walkout. Initially hesitant, she eventually complied, allowing the session to continue.
The Senate later approved her motion and established an eight-member ad hoc committee to engage with the FCT administration on the demolition issue.
Additionally, the Senate resolved that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) should suspend ongoing demolitions, except for those sanctioned by the courts, until the committee concludes its discussions with the FCTA.
