Kogi State’s Local Government pensioners are voicing their frustration over the persistent non-payment of pensions, lamenting that despite recent improvements, they have yet to receive any gratuity.
Clement Ohida, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners in Kogi State, appealed to Governor Ahmed Ododo to extend the improved payment scheme to local government pensioners.
Speaking after a Central Working Committee Meeting of the Union in Lokoja, Ohida expressed gratitude for the increased percentage payments made to pensioners following the February pension disbursement. However, he emphasized the need for further steps, including the harmonization of pensions for retirees of past years.
Ohida stressed the achievability of paying 100 per cent pension, citing federal government policies urging the clearance of all pension arrears. He urged the government to address the issue of gratuity payments, which he believes would alleviate the economic challenges faced by pensioners.
Highlighting the prolonged struggle of local government pensioners, Ohida stated, “We are coming from a situation where pensioners have had to live with 30-35 per cent of their pension for whatever reason. But progressively we’re now on 85 per cent, and we appreciate that. We’re ready to bend backward, but we also ask for more, including 100 per cent payment of pension, harmonization, and gratuity payment.”
He urged the government to consider implementing minimum pension schemes to ensure pensioners receive reasonable amounts, citing cases where some retirees receive as little as N5000.
Despite their grievances, Ohida assured the state government of pensioners’ support and cooperation.
