Kwara State Resident Arrested for Criticizing Governor’s “Poorly Constructed” Bridge

The Kwara State government has ordered the arrest of Alhaji Abdulganiyu Babaimale, an elderly resident, for voicing his criticism over the allegedly “poorly” constructed Tanke Flyover Bridge.

The arrest unfolded in a dramatic fashion as police officers, led by CSP Mustapha Olayemi, reportedly stormed a mosque around 5:30 pm, apprehending Babaimale after his evening prayers.

Babaimale’s family member, speaking anonymously, revealed the distressing circumstances of the arrest, stating that it occurred in a “commando style” and expressing concerns that he might be detained until Wednesday due to an upcoming public holiday.

The arrest comes in the wake of a petition filed by the Kwara State government against Babaimale, who is accused of disturbing the peace through his critique of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s flagship infrastructure project.

Sources suggest that the police, acting on a purported list provided by the governor, may continue making arrests, with opposition figures allegedly targeted.

The Tanke Flyover Bridge, a project initially awarded to JMK Construction Company Limited, has been marred by controversy and quality concerns, leading to its subsequent revocation and re-award to City International Dimensions. Despite a promise from the state government that the N2.4 billion project would be ready for use in January 2023.

The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ejire Toun, has yet to provide confirmation or comment on the arrest.
