Chieftains of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo state stormed the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) demanding the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Sylvia Agu.
The protest, led by the State Chairman of the LP, Callistus Ihejiagwa, was hinged on allegations of unacceptable conduct by the REC during the last National/State house of Assembly elections. The party leaders claimed that election guidelines were not duly followed.
The LP chieftains insisted that Agu’s removal was crucial to ensure a credible governorship election in Imo state, scheduled for November 11, 2023.
Responding to the protest, Emmanuella Opara, head of voter education in INEC office in the state, reassured the party of the commission’s readiness to conduct a peaceful and transparent election. She emphasized that INEC is committed to upholding democratic values and ensuring that every vote counts.
As tension mounts ahead of the upcoming governorship election, all eyes are on INEC and how it will respond to these demands. The situation underscores the importance of trust and transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process.
