The Supreme Court Ignored Our Request For Judgement Copies, Labour Party Raises Alarm

The Labour Party (LP) has raised concerns over the Supreme Court’s handling of their appeal in the Presidential Election case, citing a disregard for their request for judgment copies.

Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the National Secretary of LP, sounded the alarm about the unprecedented situation in a press release dated November 28, 2023 on behalf of the Party.

The Supreme Court had notified LP and its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, on October 25, 2023, that the judgment would be delivered on October 26, 2023. However, the LP asserts that their appeal was intricately tied to a separate Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) case, a move they find “extraordinary, terribly shocking, most unprecedented, and unacceptable.”

Despite the separate nature of the appeals, the LP claims that the Supreme Court failed to provide them with judgment copies, violating the constitutional obligation to furnish all parties with duly authenticated copies within seven days.

The Labour Party emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The Supreme Court’s conduct is regrettable and unprecedented, constituting an unmitigated breach of the constitutional right of LP and her candidate to a fair hearing.”
