After One Day Showdown, Labour Unions Suspend Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their strike action, which began on Monday, over issues concerning the new minimum wage and the recent increase in electricity tariffs. This suspension will last for five days.

The decision to suspend the strike was reached after a joint extraordinary national executive council meeting of both unions on Tuesday in Abuja.

The strike had brought significant disruption across the nation, affecting various sectors including education, healthcare, and transportation. Schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports were shut down, causing widespread inconvenience. The shutdown also impacted the national grid, plunging many areas into darkness.

The grievances of the unions centered on two main issues: the hike in electricity tariffs and the lack of agreement on a new minimum wage. Workers have been demanding an increase in the minimum wage to reflect the rising cost of living and economic challenges facing the country.

During the strike, Labour leaders expressed their frustration over the government’s handling of these issues. They argued that the increased electricity tariffs have placed an additional financial burden on Nigerians, many of whom are already struggling to make ends meet.

The strike’s impact was immediately felt nationwide, with many public services coming to a halt. In some areas, essential services like healthcare were disrupted, causing distress among citizens who rely on public hospitals for medical care.

In the aviation sector, flights were grounded, leading to cancellations and delays. Passengers at various airports expressed their frustration, with some saying they were left stranded without any clear information on when flights would resume.#Labour
