Hanging

Enugu State High Court has sentenced Chiamaka Ifezue to death by hanging for the killing of a 27-year-old makeup artist, Ijeoma Nweke, on November 11, 2020.

Chiamaka and her brother, Chukwuemeka, were arraigned before the court on two counts of charges bordering on conspiracy and murder in 2021.

In a two-hour ruling, Justice Kenneth Okpe, of Enugu State High Court declared the accused guilty of killing the deceased, adding that the evidence presented to the court had settled the case against the defendant.

According to reports, Nweke went missing after leaving for work on Wednesday. It was said that her client refused to reveal the location of the job, and asked the deceased to stop at the Enugu State Broadcasting Service bus stop, where she would then be taken to the venue by a taxi driver.

It was alleged that the suspects coerced Ijeoma, the deceased, into consuming a poisoned drink, which ultimately led to her demise. The suspects poured what seemed like acid on her and dumped her body in the Maryland area of Enugu City.

Following a no-case motion made by Mr. Chuma Oguejiofor, the defence attorney, Chukwuemeka was found not guilty by Justice Okpe during the trial.

However, while delivering the final ruling on the case, the court agreed with the submissions of Mrs Chinelo Chigbo, who led the prosecution from the Department of Public Prosecutions, that the suspect was responsible for the death of the 27-year-old make-up artist.

Following its conviction for murder, the court found Chiamaka guilty of murder and consequently sentenced her to death by hanging.
