Lagos State Government has taken a decisive step towards environmental sustainability by announcing the prohibition of styrofoam and other single-use plastics plates in the state.
This move comes in response to growing concerns about the environmental impact of these materials in the densely populated city.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, shared the announcement via his X handle on Sunday.
Expressing worries over the environmental menace posed by single-use plastics, particularly non-biodegradable styrofoam, Wahab declared the ban’s immediate effect.

He stated, “Following the menace which single-use plastics especially non-biodegradable Styrofoam are causing on the environment, the Lagos State government through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is hereby announcing a ban on the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the State with immediate effect.”
The commissioner did not provide specific details on how the government plans to ensure compliance with this directive.
