Lagos Govt Issues 4-day Ultimatum to Occupants Living Under Bridges

Lagos

The Lagos State Government has issued a four-day notice for illegal occupants to evacuate Obalende Bridge, Apongbon Bridge, Ijora Bridge, National Stadium, and illegal motor parks.

In a collective statement by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Seun Osiyemi; the Governor’s Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa; and the Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi, a stern warning was issued.

It mandated that all shanties, residents, traders, squatters, and abandoned vehicles beneath the Obalende bridge must clear the area by Thursday afternoon, as enforcement action will commence early Friday.

The announcement emphasized that all commercial vehicle operators currently on the main roads in Obalende must relocate to designated parks.

The government expressed dissatisfaction with the degradation of Obalende’s visual appeal by these operators and declared that it is imperative to restore the area’s aesthetics.

“We also inspected the ongoing clean up of Apongbon Under-Bridge, Ebute Ero and other areas to monitor the level of compliance with Mr. Governor’s directive that there should be no form of trading or habitation under the bridge and all adjoining areas across Lagos State,” the statement reads.

Government officials emphasized that the state government is committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Within the next few months, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, LASPARK, will undertake beautification and landscaping projects at Obalende under bridge, Apongbon underbridge, and Ebute Ero underbridge.

Moreover, a comprehensive cleanup initiative will be implemented across the state.

In a prior announcement at Ilubirin, a pivotal project of the Lagos State Government aimed at revitalizing Isale Eko, it was highlighted that addressing the outflow of water through the Ilubirin path is imperative.

Furthermore, the directive has been issued for the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps to enforce the prohibition of highway crossing throughout the state, with immediate arrests and prosecutions for offenders.

“Crossing the highways is prohibited by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Protection Law 2017,” it said.
