Nigerian activist and politician Omoyele Sowore shared a blunt critique of Lagos, describing it as a “glorified deodorized city.”
According to Sowore, Lagos’s status as a notable city in Nigeria is not due to its infrastructure or development but rather its historical significance.
He argued that Lagos, as it stands today, suffers from fundamental urban issues and fails to meet the standards of a modern city, despite being one of Nigeria’s largest metropolitan hubs.
Sowore emphasized the environmental and infrastructural challenges facing Lagos, particularly in areas like Lekki.
He warned residents to “train to become scuba divers,” as the city is at high risk of flooding and inadequate drainage systems.
Sowore’s comments underscored the need for sustainable urban planning, especially as Lagos grapples with rising water levels and poorly managed sanitation systems.
He expressed skepticism about the city’s future resilience without significant improvements.

He described Lagos’s urban environment, describing it as “dark,” “dingy,” and largely “dirty.”
Sowore argued that Lagos lacks essential public services such as mass transit, proper drainage, and sewage systems, which he believes are basic requirements for a city to be recognized as a true metropolitan area.
“There’s no city in Nigeria,” he claimed, comparing the state of Nigerian cities unfavorably to global urban standards.
