Lagos: Sanwo-Olu Govt Seizes 488 Vehicles in Eight Months for Illegal Use of BRT Lanes

The Lagos State Government has seized a total of 488 vehicles over the past eight months for the illegal use of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes.

This was revealed in a press release shared on Monday via the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, titled “LASG Issues Strict Warning to Motorists on Continued BRT Lane Violations.”

The statement, signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, strongly cautioned both private and commercial drivers to stop using BRT lanes unlawfully across the state.

According to LASTMA, these vehicles were apprehended between January and August 2024, with all offenders subsequently charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution.

Special attention has been directed toward motorists violating BRT lane regulations along the Abule-Egba corridor, where the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) recently completed road repairs.

With the improved road conditions from Abule-Egba to Iyana-Ipaja, officials assert that further breaches of BRT lanes are now both unnecessary and completely unjustifiable.

“Motorists plying routes from Abule-Egba through Iyana-Ipaja, Dopemu, and Oshodi must strictly adhere to designated lanes,” the release emphasised.

The crackdown has been widespread, with key areas affected including Ikorodu, Maryland, Anthony, Apongbon, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ojuelegba, and Oyingbo, where LASTMA operatives have been actively enforcing the rules.

The government’s broader infrastructure development initiatives depend on the cooperation of road users, who are urged to practice discipline and patience to ensure an orderly flow of traffic.

The release further highlighted the importance of motorists refraining from further encroachments on BRT lanes.

In July, LASTMA reported that it had impounded 9,370 vehicles between January and June 2024 for various traffic violations.

According to Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, 3,034 of those were private vehicles, including 1,849 cars, 549 buses, and 636 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), among others.
