Lagosians to Face Higher Costs as BRT Fares Increase by 18% from February 17

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, set to take effect on February 17, 2025.

In a statement on Thursday, LAMATA attributed the fare adjustment to rising operational expenses and the need to sustain bus services across the state.

The statement read, “The fare rise is because of the increase in the cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running and guarantee your movement around Lagos.

“We seek your understanding and cooperation.”

This follows a similar hike in June 2022, when fares on all BRT routes were raised by ₦100 due to escalating diesel prices and a shortage of spare parts.

Meanwhile, Fola Tinubu, Managing Director of Primero Transport Services Limited, a major BRT operator, has confirmed plans to convert its buses to compressed natural gas (CNG) under the federal government’s initiative.

However, he noted that this transition would not lead to lower fares, as the company remains focused on maintaining profitability.
