Liverpool to Pay Diogo Jota’s Remaining Salary to Family After Tragic Death

Liverpool Football Club will pay out the full balance of Diogo Jota’s contract—reportedly worth £14.5 million—to the late player’s family, in a move widely praised as a rare act of class in professional football.

Jota, who tragically passed away earlier this week, had two years left on his contract with Liverpool, which he signed as an extension in 2022. The Portuguese forward was on a weekly wage of £140,000, amounting to about £7.2 million annually.

Though the club had no legal obligation to continue payments, it has opted to honor the remainder of the deal in full, offering financial support to Jota’s grieving wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three children.

The gesture was highlighted by Nigerian football commentator SportsDokitor, who posted on X:
“Wow, Liverpool has decided to pay Diogo Jota’s remaining 2 years’ salary on his contract to his family. Now that’s class from Liverpool; they didn’t have to but did, and that’s how it should be. Kudos, @LFC. ‘You Never Walk Alone’ indeed.”

The post, now widely circulated, has sparked an outpouring of respect and emotion from fans and neutrals alike.

Reacting to the update, @Ohams4NewNaija wrote, “Excellent. Living up to their motto. Kudos to Liverpool.” @gaustinto1 added: “Liverpool is structured to be more of a family to just a club. And this is the reason most former players and staff always attach themselves to the club even after leaving.”

In addition to the financial commitment, Liverpool is also expected to put in place further support measures to assist the family in the coming months.
