A 56-year-old man, Olorundare Adesanmi, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Kubwa Division of the FCT High Court for raping his 17-year-old housemaid in November 2018.
The case was reported to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) by the victim, who became pregnant as a result of the rape.
The prosecution counsel, Arinze Mbanefo, told the court that Mr Adesanmi violated section 1(2) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 by intentionally penetrating the vaginal of his underage housemaid.
The defence counsel, Peter Dajang, argued that the sexual intercourse was consensual, but the judge, Justice Asmau Akanbi-Yusuf, dismissed his claim.

Justice Akanbi-Yusuf said that the evidence before the court showed that the victim was below 18 years at the time of the crime on November 15, 2018, and that consent was irrelevant in such a case.
She found Mr Adesanmi guilty of rape and convicted him accordingly.
Mr Dajang pleaded with the court to show mercy to his client, saying he was a first-time offender, but the judge gave him the maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
