In a significant blow to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a mass exodus of top chieftains has rocked the party, signaling deep-seated discontent within its ranks.
The former governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, led the wave of resignations, tendering his departure in a letter dated April 23, 2024. Citing the party’s inability to enact internal reforms, enforce its own rules, or provide credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ihedioha expressed his resignation effective immediately.
The letter, written by Ihedioha stated, “Since 1998, I have contributed my quota to the development and transformation of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as one of the founding members.
“Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is, sadly no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party effective immediately.”
Joining Ihedioha in severing ties with the PDP, Obioma M. Iheduru, former Secretary of the Imo PDP Elders’ committee submitted his resignation letter.This was contained in a letter dated April 22, 2024 and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman Osu-owerre ward 1, Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo State.
The letter partly stated, “I hereby my position as the Secretary, Imo PDP Elders’ committee. Both resignation are effective immediately as the date here above stated.
“With the assurances of my best regards,” he added.
Joining Iheduru in severing ties with the PDP, Chief (BARR) Chris Okewulonu, a former member of the PDP Board of Trustees submitted his resignation letter. This was contained in a letter dated April 22, 2024 and addressed to the Chairman Board of Trustees, people’s democratic party (PDP), PDP national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
The letter partly read, “This is to inform you that I have resigned from my position as member PDP board of Trustees, with effect from the date of this letter. Be further informed that I had a few hours ago, similarly resigned my membership of PDP, in my Avutu Ward, Obowo LGA, Imo State.
“I remain grateful to the Party for giving me the opportunity to have served it in various capacities,” he added.
Furthermore, Chief Stanley Ekezie MCArb, former South East Zonal Ex Officio member, added to the exodus by resigning from his position within the party. His letter, also dated April 22, 2024 and addressed to the Zonal Chairman (South East), Peoples democratic party, South East Zonal Headquarters, Enugu.

The letter partly stated, “Sequel to my resignation from the PDP at home ward, Umunkwo in Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo State, I’m hereby also tendering my resignation as a South East Zonal Ex Officio member.
“Accept my regards,” he added.
The series of resignations underscores a growing crisis within the PDP, with prominent members expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s organizational structure, leadership, and effectiveness as an opposition force.
