Massacre at Kano Mosque: Death Toll Climbs to 17

The death toll from the horrific attack on Gadan village mosque in Kano has surged to 17, with eight individuals still undergoing treatment in the hospital. The devastating incident unfolded as worshippers gathered for prayers, only to face a violent assault that claimed numerous lives.

According to SP Abdullahi Haruna, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, “Two more victims died while receiving treatment at the hospital.” Out of the 25 individuals affected by the attack, 16 perished at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, while one victim succumbed to injuries at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

The perpetrator, identified as 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar, stands accused of igniting the mosque, leading to the tragic loss of lives. The Upper Shari’a Court in Rijiyar Zaki, Kano, has ordered Abubakar’s remand in a Correctional Centre, with the hearing scheduled for May 31, 2024.

Chief Bola Tinubu extended his condolences to the Government and people of Kano State in light of the devastating incident. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu expressed his sorrow, saying, “President Tinubu mourns victims of Kano mosque fire incident.”

The attack occurred on May 15, when the assailant set fire to the mosque while nearly 40 worshippers were inside, as confirmed by the Kano State police command. The motive behind the attack, as per police reports, stemmed from a family dispute over inheritance.

In response to the tragedy, Tinubu condemned the arson, emphasizing the need for thorough investigation and prosecution of suspects by law enforcement agencies. He offered prayers for the swift recovery of the wounded and extended his sympathies to the affected families.
