Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the Bola Tinubu-led government for celebrating an increment of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) amid nationwide acute hunger, starvation, and steady inflation rise.
Sowore stated that the report of GDP increment by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) was a mere old lie meant to deceive Nigerians.
He wondered how the Nigerian government could be celebrating a GDP increase when the country is submerged in acute hunger, starvation, high rate of unemployment, rising inflation, frequency of national grid collapse, and potholes that have risen by 100% from what they were.
Sowore said such increment was an obvious deliberate lie, deception and tricks for the government to make Nigerians believe in the reported GDP growth amid continued Naira depreciation.
In a post on his official X handle, Sowore wrote, “Tinubunomics: Nigeria’s GDP grows by 3.46% in Third Quarter of 2024 – NBS.
“Hunger, starvation, unemployment, inflation, frequency of collapse of national grid and potholes also grew by 100%. Naira value continues to depreciate.
“These tricks are not new. They once claimed Nigeria’s economy was the biggest in Africa when the electricity supply was near zero!”
Sowore quoted the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Benjamin Disrael, who once said, “There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics.”
Recall that The NBS earlier reported that Nigeria’s GDP grew by 3.46% in the Third Quarter (Q3) of 2024 from 3.19% recorded in the Second Quarter (Q2) of the year.
