Military Junta Sacks Prime Minister, Dissolves Govt in Burkina Faso

On Friday, Burkina Faso’s military junta dismissed Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyélem de Tambèla and dissolved the government, according to a decree issued by Interim President Ibrahim Traoré.

The decree declared that “the functions of the prime minister are terminated” and that “the government is dissolved,” without providing further explanation.

Tambèla, a lawyer, was appointed in October 2022, shortly after the coup led by Traoré, who, at 36 years old, is the world’s youngest head of state.

Burkina Faso experienced two coups in 2022: the first on January 24, led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, and the second on September 30, led by Traoré.

Both coups occurred amidst widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to address escalating jihadist violence.

Following the September coup, the junta established a transitional charter during a national dialogue in October 2022, initially planning for a return to civilian rule by July 1, 2024.

However, in May 2023, the junta extended its transitional period by five years.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has faced relentless attacks from jihadist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, which have seized control of large portions of the country.

The violence has claimed thousands of lives and displaced more than two million people.
