Governors Opposition to N60,000 as Minimum Wage Despite Increase in Federal Allocation is Shocking– Shehu Sani

Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani has expressed surprise at the governors’ opposition to a proposed minimum wage of N60,000 for civil servants.

During ongoing negotiations by the tripartite committee, the Federal government initially proposed a new minimum wage of N60,000.

However, this offer was quickly rejected by organized labor, which demanded a minimum wage exceeding N400,000.

Despite this, the governors of the 36 states have also rejected the Federal Government’s N60,000 proposal.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) responded by embarking on an indefinite strike on Monday, protesting against the federal government’s offer.

In a statement on Friday, Hajiya Halimah Salihu Ahmed, Director of Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), explained that the N60,000 wage is unrealistic. She argued that implementing it would force some states to resort to borrowing to pay workers’ salaries.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th Assembly, found the governors’ stance surprising.

In a post on his X handle, Sani wrote, “Governors’ opposition to N60,000 as minimum wage in spite of the unprecedented increase in Federal allocation is shocking,”
