Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, revealed plans during a meeting with Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa. Kyari emphasized the urgency of addressing food price inflation, stating, “Today, the number one driver of inflation is food price inflation.”
The minister reaffirmed the commitment to Bola Tinubu’s agenda on food security, outlining a vision for 2024 that focuses on sustainable programs and massive food production. “We are determined to drive agricultural transformation, enhance productivity, and ensure that our farmers have the necessary support to thrive,” Kyari declared.
Highlighting the use of technology and mechanization, Kyari explained the ministry’s approach to ramping up staple crop production. The second phase of the Dry/Wet Season Farming intervention is set to begin, aiming for success and overcoming challenges with stakeholder support.
Gov. Namadi expressed optimism about wheat production in Jigawa, citing cultivated hectares reaching nearly 50,000. He assured ongoing collaboration with the federal government’s wheat dry season farming initiative.
Kyari concluded by urging stakeholders to support the ministry’s intervention, emphasizing the cooperation needed for success. The minister’s focus on sustainable programs and the imminent dry season farming intervention reflects a comprehensive strategy to achieve food security and tackle inflation in Nigeria.
