A primary six pupil, identified as Joshua, has tragically died after being swept away by floodwaters in the Ikosi, Ketu area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred as Joshua was returning home from school with his classmates.
Joshua’s mother, a fruit seller, expressed her grief over the loss of her only child. “Joshua died hungry and cold. He was in primary six; he was supposed to write his common entrance exam,” she told Daily Trust.
Eyewitness Oloyede, a local youth leader, recounted warning children about the danger of the flooding.
“But unfortunately, the plank that was used to bridge the canal was completely covered by water, and they fell into the drainage.
“I managed to swim and rescue one of them, but unfortunately, Joshua was swept away by the heavy currents and died,” he added.
A community leader, speaking anonymously, criticized the Lagos State government for neglecting a project meant to channel the drainage, leaving the area vulnerable to flooding.
