My Wife No Longer Has Time For Me; Always Going To Church, I Want Divorce—Man Tells Court

Mr. Aku Bakari, a government employee, brought his wife, Mary, to a customary court in Nyanya on Friday, seeking a divorce.

He cited her excessive involvement in church affairs as the reason for the dissolution of their marriage.

Residing in Nyanya, Abuja, the petitioner accused his wife of neglecting her responsibilities as a spouse and mother in his divorce plea.

“My wife no longer has time for me and our children; she is always going to church. Sometimes she goes to church on Friday and sleeps there until Sunday evening.

“She does not want to know whether we eat or not,” he said.

The petitioner informed the court that his wife had neglected her marital responsibilities due to her involvement with the church.

He stated that despite his efforts to dissuade her from attending, she adamantly refused.

“We were happily living together as husband and wife until the year 2010, when I started noticing some strange behaviours in my wife especially her mode of dressing.

“She stopped wearing earrings and necklaces, claiming that those things belong to the devil.

“That was when I noticed that she had stopped attending our family church, the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, NCCN, and was attending another church where she was being brainwashed.

“I told her to stop, but she refused. It is on this account that I wish to divorce her,” he said.

Mary, the respondent, a cleaner by profession, appeared in court and refuted the accusations against her.

Presiding over the case, Judge Doocivir Yawe urged the couple to seek reconciliation for the well-being of their children. The proceedings were adjourned until January 30 for further hearing.
