“N5 Billion Paid as Ransom to Kidnappers Since 2016,” Reps Deputy Speaker Reveals, as Nigeria Ranks Fourth in Global Terrorism Index in Sub-Saharan Africa

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has revealed that an estimated N5 billion has been paid as ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria since 2016.

Speaking at the opening of the national dialogue on state policing organized by the House of Representatives, Kalu emphasized the alarming growth of the criminal enterprise in the country.

He cited the 2024 Global Terrorism Index, which ranked Nigeria fourth in Sub-Saharan Africa and eighth globally, as evidence of the concerning security situation.

Kalu stressed the urgent need for a multi-layered policing approach that prioritizes local security and enables a more responsive policing environment.

Kalu acknowledged the divided opinions among Nigerians regarding solutions to the nation’s security challenges, noting that one school of thought advocates for a return to multilayered policing.
