Shubomi Fashola, the sister of popular singer Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, has expressed her frustration over the prolonged detention of her brother by the police. She claims that he is being held without any charge or evidence linking him to the death of his colleague Mohbad.
Naira Marley and his associate Sam Larry were arrested on September 30, 2023, after Mohbad was found dead in a hotel room in Lagos. The police alleged that Mohbad died of a drug overdose and that Naira Marley and Sam Larry were involved in supplying him with the drugs. However, no formal charges have been filed against them and they have been remanded in police custody pending the completion of the investigation.
Shubomi took to her Instagram page on Saturday to defend her brother and demand his release. She said that Naira Marley had voluntarily returned to Nigeria from abroad to cooperate with the police and that he had nothing to do with Mohbad’s death. She accused the police of violating his human rights and bowing to the pressure of social media users who have been calling for justice for Mohbad.
She wrote, “Keeping someone who willingly traveled back to help in detention for nearly 30 days, with no charge, no evidence, no sufficient witness is a violation of his human rights. Keeping him in custody to appease social media and the internet mob is crazy.
If you have evidence against him for anything he’s been accused of, charge him! But if you don’t release him. It shouldn’t take this long for the investigation to be done.
We all want the truth! We all want justice. What is the delay? We’ve already lost one person, trying to lynch another is not going to bring about justice.”
Shubomi’s post has received mixed reactions from her followers, some of whom supported her stance while others criticized her for being insensitive to Mohbad’s family and fans. Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji, was a rising star in the Nigerian music industry and had collaborated with Naira Marley on several songs. He was 24 years old when he died.
