The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has suspended its proposed 800% hike in navigational charges.
Abdullahi Musa, a spokesman for the agency, stated that the suspension was ordered by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, due to the “current economic challenges faced by Nigerians.”
In a statement on Monday, the minister stressed the importance of further consultation before making any changes.
Additionally, NAMA head Umar Farouk pointed out the severe economic pressures on the aviation industry, worsened by global economic volatility, fuel price increases, and currency instability.

He proposed strategies for survival and growth, which include improving operational efficiency, embracing innovation and technology, strengthening infrastructure, and fostering collaboration and partnerships.
The airspace management agency had proposed increasing its fees to maintain its operations and ensure the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s airspace.
The new unit rate for en-route services was set to rise from ₦2,000 to ₦18,000 per flight, while the minimum terminal navigation charge was to increase from ₦6,000 to ₦54,000 per flight, effective September 1, 2024.
