NAPTIP Reveals Many Orphanages in Nigeria Under Investigation for Human Trafficking

Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), announced that many orphanages in the country are currently under investigation.

She made this statement on Thursday during a Community Dialogue and Advocacy on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence organized by the agency for stakeholders in the Gwagwalada communities of the FCT.

According to Waziri-Azi, some orphanages are involved in significant infractions that can be classified as human trafficking.

She further revealed that NAPTIP is actively prosecuting several of these orphanages.

The Director-General explained, “The agency is witnessing a lot with these orphanages. No orphanage has the right to conclude the adoption of children.”

She urged orphanages to exercise caution in their operations and advised Nigerians to be vigilant when adopting babies from these institutions.

Additionally, she emphasized the importance of following the proper legal procedures for adoption across the country.
