National Grid Collapses for the Umpteenth Time in 2024

Nigeria experienced yet another nationwide power outage on Saturday as the national grid suffered another system collapse. This latest incident adds to the growing number of collapses plaguing the country’s electricity supply in 2024.

Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications at Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), confirmed the development in a notice issued on Saturday.

The system collapse occurred at approximately 15:09 hours, disrupting bulk electricity supply from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) National Control Centre.

Ezeh explained that the power supply disruption (due to the collapse of the national grid) has severely impacted the Southeast states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. “This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network,” the notice stated.

Due to the collapse of the national grid, all interface TCN stations are out of supply, preventing EEDC from providing services to its customers in the affected states.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” the notice added.

This incident follows a recent announcement by TCN that electricity generation had declined to a peak of 4,723.30 megawatts on July 4, 2024, down from 4800 megawatts in May. The recurring collapses have been a persistent issue, with Nigeria recording at least three system collapses in 2024 alone. According to TCN, there have been approximately 227 system collapses in the past 14 years.

The ongoing power issues come amid the controversial electricity tariff hikes for Band A customers, which took effect on April 3 and July 1, 2024. Despite being promised 20-24 hours of power supply, Band A customers saw their electricity tariff increase from N66 per kilowatt-hour to N206.80 per kilowatt-hour.

The frequent national grid collapses and unreliable power supply continue to frustrate Nigerians, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable and reliable electricity infrastructure in the country.
