The Nigerian Navy handed over 11 artisans to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The artisans were suspected of planning to build an illegal refinery in the creeks of Rivers State.
The Base Operations Officer of Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder Port Harcourt, Cdr. Sa’id Kabir, said the artisans were caught during a patrol of Krakrama Waterways, where the Navy was fighting against illegal oil bunkering.
He said the Navy’s Tactical Response and Assault Squadron intercepted a boat with 11 people and various materials on board on Jan. 23. The materials included 10 metal plates, 14 angle iron, and 20 gas cylinders, which were hidden in the boat.
“Investigation revealed that the suspects were conveying the materials to Bille, a riverine community, with the intent to construct an illegal refinery.
“It was also discovered that the suspects specialise in the construction of illegal refineries and were contracted by one Mr John,” Kabir said.
He warned oil thieves to leave Rivers State, as the Navy was determined to stop them and bring them to justice. He also said the Navy was aware of the attempts by some criminals to tarnish the reputation of the security agency, so that they could continue their unlawful operations.
“The base will not be deterred by the antics of enemies of the nation in the discharge of its constitutional duties.

“We assure the people of Rivers of our readiness to facilitate a peaceful and secure environment for the conduct of legitimate business activities.
“To this end, NNS Pathfinder requests the support of members of the public to provide us with useful information on suspicious criminal activities in their communities,’’ he said,” he said.
Mr Monday Lawal of the NSCDC Command in Rivers, who received the 11 suspects and the materials, said the case would be investigated thoroughly and the results would be made public.
He also said the suspects would face trial if they were found guilty of the charges against them.
