NBA Knocks Tinubu Over Killings in Plateau, Benue, Demands Immediate Action

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the renewed wave of brutal killings in Plateau, Benue, and other parts of Nigeria, describing the attacks as “senseless” and a grave threat to the rule of law.

The association expressed deep concern over recent incidents, including the massacre of a family of eight and the confirmed killing of at least 52 persons in Zike hamlet, Kimakpa community, Kwall district of Bassa LGA, Plateau State.

In a strongly worded statement issued by NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), the association demanded immediate and decisive action from the government.

“These tragic events once again expose the glaring deficiencies in Nigeria’s internal security architecture,” Osigwe said.

“The government must stop the killings and protect Nigerians as mandated by the Constitution.” The NBA emphasized that the continued violence violates the sanctity of human life and weakens public trust in government institutions.

It also reminded the authorities of their constitutional duty, citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution which states: “The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.”

The NBA called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the governors of the affected states to implement robust and coordinated security strategies, stressing the importance of intelligence gathering, rapid response, and the protection of vulnerable communities.

“It is constitutionally unacceptable that Nigerians continue to live in fear, while entire communities are being routinely attacked, displaced, and devastated,” the statement noted.

In addition, the association urged the Inspector General of Police, Chief of Army Staff, and other heads of security agencies to act with urgency and professionalism.

The NBA also called on the National Human Rights Commission and civil society groups to monitor developments, ensure justice is pursued, and amplify the voices of victims.

“No society can thrive under the persistent threat of violence,” Osigwe declared. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and communities. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
