The National Examination Council (NECO) has announced the results of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for internal candidates.
According to NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dantana Wushishi, 828,284 candidates, representing 60.55 percent of those who took the exam, achieved five credits including Mathematics and English Language.
Prof. Wushishi shared this information with journalists during the results announcement at the Council’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday.
He also disclosed that 1,147,597 candidates, or 83.90 percent, obtained five credits or more, regardless of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.
Out of the 1,376,423 candidates who registered for the examination, 1,367,736 sat for it, comprising 702,112 male and 665,624 female candidates.
According to him, “The number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice in 2024 is 8,437 as against 12,030 in 2023 which shows a reduction of 30.1 percent.”
The NECO registrar also reported that there are 2,267 candidates with special needs. Among them, 1,104 have hearing impairments, 348 have visual impairments, 342 have albinism, 237 have autism, and 236 have low vision.
He further disclosed that during the 2024 SSCE, 40 schools across 17 states were implicated in mass cheating.
Additionally, 21 supervisors from 12 states were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding and abetting, absenteeism, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence.
“One school in Ekiti State was recommended for de-recognition for mass cheating in 2 core subjects and 1 science subject,” Wushishi said.
The NECO registrar added that the state-by-state performance analysis revealed Abia State at the top, with 83.40 percent of its candidates achieving five credits or more, including Mathematics and English. In contrast, Katsina State ranked lowest, with only 2.42 percent of candidates meeting the same criteria.
“The state also leads in candidates with five credits and above irrespective of Mathematics and English language 95.84 percent.
“For least performed states with five credits and above including mathematics and English language, Katsina State is bottom on the table with 42.00 percent with just 2.42 percent ahead of Kano which came second to least with 44.42 percent,” the register announced.
