The National Examination Council (NECO) has released the results for the June/July 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). The results show a significant success rate, with 61.60% of students scoring five credits or above in both English language and mathematics.
The Council’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, announced the results on Tuesday. He said that “a total of 1,196,985 candidates sat for the examinations”. Out of these, “737,308 passed with five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics subjects”, which means that “61.60 percent of 1,196,985 candidates” are eligible for admission into tertiary institutions.
Professor Wushishi also said that “93 schools were found to be involved in whole-school (mass) cheating” and “52 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding, and abetting of malpractices during the examinations”. He added that “the erring schools will be invited to the Council for discussion, after which appropriate sanctions will be applied”.
The registrar further said that “1,543 candidates with special needs also sat for the examinations”. He gave the gender distribution of the candidates as “616,398 males and 580,587 females”.
“The reports the Council has received so far indicate that the 2023 SSCE Internal has been certified as the best in recent times. We have designed the analyses in a variety of ways that will help awaken stakeholders to the realization of their true position in the national sphere. This is also in line with our mandate, which empowers us to conduct a standard national assessment of educational performance at junior and senior secondary school levels”.
The Council has advised all candidates to check their results on the NECO website. They can do this by purchasing a token on the site, which will allow them to access their result.
