The lawmaker representing Delta North in the Senate, Ned Nwoko, is reportedly set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
With this defection, the APC would have full control of all three senatorial seats in Delta State. Currently, the senators representing Delta Central and Delta South districts are members of the APC, having won their seats during the 2023 general elections.
Reports indicate that Nwoko’s decision to leave the PDP stems from his strained relationship with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
Nwoko and his constituency have reportedly been sidelined by the governor, who is said to prioritise the interests of his political ally and predecessor, Okowa.
Okowa, who was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the failed 2023 presidential bid, is allegedly eyeing the Delta North senatorial seat, currently occupied by Nwoko, in the upcoming 2027 elections.
The tension between the two political figures has been further compounded by Okowa’s legal troubles. In November 2024, the former governor was arrested over allegations of diverting N1.3 trillion in derivation funds from the federation account between 2015 and 2023. Though he was later released, his travel documents were confiscated, leaving his political future uncertain.
