A netizen on X has expressed concern over Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s visit to Ibadan, where he delivered a guest lecture at the University of Ibadan’s International Conference Centre on 19 November 2025.
The lecture, hosted by southern Nigerian Muslim scholars, drew criticism because of Gumi’s history of negotiating with terrorists in northern Nigeria, prompting questions about the prudence of hosting him in the South-West.
The alarm was intensified by a terrorist attack on Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, on Tuesday, which reportedly left at least two people dead and several others abducted.

With Kwara located about five hours’ drive from Ibadan, the netizen warned that insecurity from the North-Central region could potentially spread into Yorubaland, noting that “these threats are closer than we think.”
Netizens have been calling for Gumi’s arrest and questioning the organisers of the lecture.
However, residents have raised broader concerns about government complicity and emphasized the need for reinforced regional security measures, including heightened vigilance by Amotekun in the South-West.
