A road rehabilitation project recently completed in Makun Sagamu, situated in the Sagamu local government area of Ogun State, has collapsed just two months after its inauguration, following heavy rainfall.
The project, spearheaded by the Ogun State Government, aimed to bolster the community’s infrastructure and was showcased in a short documentary released on various social media platforms four weeks ago.
Dubbed the Ojumele-Ajegunle Road, the initiative was lauded by residents in the documentary for its purported enhancement of vehicular and pedestrian movement within the area.
The state government stated in the documentary, “As part of our commitment to ensuring quality infrastructure for our community, we are pleased to announce the successful completion of the Ojumele-Ajegunle Road rehabilitation project in Makun Sagamu.
“The rehabilitation was undertaken with the aim of delivering well-maintained roads that will benefit our residents,” it added.
However, barely a month after its inauguration, the road suffered significant damage following a downpour, prompting residents to share images online, indicating the collapse of sections of the road. Concerns about the quality of materials used in its construction were raised by many.
Reacting to the situation, social media users expressed doubt about the government’s efforts, with some questioning the durability of the construction.
One user, Rehanat, stated, “He (the governor) obviously didn’t do anything. Let him do a good road and stop using hoodlums as an excuse. Use good material, as you say.”
Similarly, Zubairu Abdullahi echoed concerns about the construction quality, asserting, “The road was poorly constructed.”
The collapse of the rehabilitated road has sparked public outrage and raised questions about the effectiveness of infrastructure projects undertaken by the state government.
