Newcastle United’s undefeated run in the Champions League has come to an abrupt end after facing a 1-0 defeat to Dortmund at St. James’ Park on Wednesday.
The Magpies, who had led Group F going into the evening, are now third, behind Dortmund. Dortmund led at halftime despite the first 45 minutes of play being quite well balanced, with both teams having opportunities to take the lead.
Just before halftime, Germany’s Felix Nmecha scored his first goal to seal the win. Newcastle’s first Champions League loss of the season came from his one and only goal in the game.
Nick Pope, the goalie for Newcastle United, had two incredible saves in the first half. But Dortmund held onto their advantage in spite of late pressure from Newcastle, as Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon both struck the crossbar.
This loss brings Newcastle’s record against losses at St. James’s Park in all competitions to just three, joining Arsenal and Liverpool on that extremely limited list. The Magpies’ next tough travels are to Dortmund and Paris, and their last group-stage fixture will see them host AC Milan on Tyneside.
