More than 200 healthcare workers enlisted by the Kaduna State Government in June of the previous year have expressed dismay over not receiving their wages for eight consecutive months.

Recalling reports from DAILY POST, it’s noted that in 2023, the state administration hired over 200 nurses at grade level seven, assigning them to various general hospitals within the state.

However, as per the nurses’ statements, they have toiled for eight months without compensation. Their remuneration covered only three months—February, March, and April—falling short of the stipulated amount indicated in their appointment documents.

One of the nurses, who did not wish to be named, said: “We have not been paid our 8 months salary arrears which we worked for because we started work in June 2023 but started receiving salary from February 2024.

“We have single mothers and divorcees among us who fend for themselves and their kids. One can only imagine the stress they go through to provide for their family.”

He pleaded with Governor Uba Sani to step in and ensure prompt payment of their overdue salaries, emphasizing that many of those stationed in rural areas are burdened with expenses for rent, food, and transportation.

Speaking anonymously, another impacted midwife shared her challenges, revealing her daily struggle to commute to Kakuri for work. She disclosed spending N1,400 daily on transportation between her community and the workplace.

“Almost all my salary goes to transportation and the work burden is too demanding. Let them pay us our 8 months arrears and increase our salary because the burden is too much on us,” she said.

The Chairman of National Association of Nurses and Midwife, Kaduna Chapter, Ishaku Yakubu, confirmed the unpaid salary arrears.

“We are aware but we are pursuing their arrears for them because I have gone to the office of Head of Service to talk about it,” he said.
