In response to a report published by Saharareporters on suspicions of a coup plot in Nigeria, the Nigerian Army has categorically dismissed the claims, labeling them as “FAKE NEWS.”
The report, dated February 25, 2024, titled, “EXCLUSIVE: Presidential Guards Brigade Placed On High Alert Over Suspicions Of Coup Plot In Nigeria; Key Brigades Under Watch As Commander Holds Emergency Meetings With Tinubu, Gbajabiamila,” exclusively detailed heightened alertness within the Presidential Guards Brigade and emergency meetings involving Col. Adebisi Onasanya, the Commander of the Presidential Guards Brigade, Chief Bola Tinubu, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.
The official statement from the Nigerian Army, shared through its official X handle, included a picture of the report with the clear designation “FAKE NEWS.”
This swift denial follows a warning issued last week by Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, cautioning against calls for a coup amid the current economic challenges in Nigeria.

General Musa emphasised the commitment of the Armed Forces to safeguarding the nation’s democracy and forewarned that legal consequences await proponents of coup d’état.
The conflicting narratives between the report and the military’s denial have generated heightened public attention, raising questions about the possibility of the initial claims.
