Nigerian cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye had to borrow a bicycle from the German team to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics after receiving a last-minute call-up to participate in the event.
Ukpeseraye, who made history as the first Nigerian cyclist to represent the country at the Olympic Games, competed in the women’s road race on August 4 but was unable to complete the event.
On Wednesday, the 25-year-old raced in the Keirin and Sprint cycling events, finishing sixth in the first round. Despite her efforts, she did not secure qualification in the subsequent repechage round.
Ukpeseraye shared her experience on her X account, revealing that she was informed on “short notice” about her participation in the second event. Without a bicycle of her own, she received assistance from the German team, who lent her a bike to use in the race.
The cyclist revealed that she had “no bicycle to race with on the tracks”, and the German team came to her rescue.
