Niger Orders UN Chief to Leave the country within 72 hours

The United Nations (UN) resident coordinator in Niger, Louise Aubin, has been given 72 hours to leave the Niger Republic, according to an order from the military government. The UN General Secretariat was allegedly “thwarting” the country’s participation in the 78th UNGA session, according to the junta.

The president of the landlocked West African nation, Mohamed Bazoum, was toppled by the military in July.  Leaders from the area and abroad have encountered a roadblock in their efforts to assist in the restoration of civilian authority in Niger.

Niger was not represented at the 78th UNGA last month, which infuriated the military administration.
The nation’s minister of foreign affairs accused the UN in a letter dated October 10 of engaging in “underhanded maneuvers” against Niger.
