Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has underscored the importance of structured, data-driven policies in Nigeria’s development, following his high-profile meetings with Indonesian leaders.
Obi, in his recent visit to Indonesia, shared insights from his discussions with key figures in the country’s past and present administrations, emphasizing how Nigeria can replicate Indonesia’s success through strategic governance.
On Monday, February 3, and Tuesday, February 4, Obi met with Agung Laksono, former Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, who served under Presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo. Laksono provided deep insights into Indonesia’s governance strategies, highlighting how meticulous planning, execution, and determination drove the country’s transformation across critical sectors.
Obi also had a session with Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, Indonesia’s former Vice President, who uniquely served under two different presidents. Kalla stressed that Indonesia’s development was made possible through a focused commitment, decisive leadership, and a simultaneous development approach across all sectors. He pointed out that sustained policy direction and leadership continuity were key to achieving long-term national progress.
Furthering his engagements, Obi met with Yandri Susanto, Indonesia’s Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions.

Susanto explained how the ministry has advanced rural development under President Widodo’s leadership by prioritizing education, healthcare, and small businesses.
Through structured policies categorizing villages from underdeveloped to self-sufficient, Indonesia has been able to ensure targeted progress and inclusive governance.
Reflecting on these discussions, Obi emphasized that Nigeria has the potential to achieve similar progress if it adopts a structured, data-driven approach focused on rural development, industrialization, and economic diversification.
He stressed that with political will and strategic execution, the country can unlock its full potential, ensuring that no region is left behind in the journey toward sustainable growth.
