Nigeria Considering BRICS Membership, Says Foreign Minister

During an official visit to Russia, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, revealed the country’s consideration of joining BRICS, a significant geopolitical bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s ambition to secure a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Highlighting the enduring military and defense cooperation between Nigeria and Russia, Tuggar expressed gratitude for Russia’s support in combating terrorism and insurgency. He underscored the importance of diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations, dating back to their establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960.

Acknowledging Russia’s assistance during the Nigerian Civil War and its ongoing support through scholarships for Nigerian students, Tuggar sought further collaboration in education and energy, including nuclear power.

The visit also aimed to strengthen bilateral agreements and deepen economic, cultural, and political ties between Nigeria and Russia, with a focus on projects such as the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and renewable energy initiatives.

Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s support for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and emphasized the potential impact on global grain exports. He affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to conclude outstanding bilateral agreements for mutual benefit.
