Nigeria Drifting Towards One-Party State – CMBG

Nigeria

The Coalition of Middle Belt Groups (CMBG) has expressed concerns over what it perceives as Nigeria’s gradual transformation into a one-party state under Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

This was revealed in a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday.

The coalition pointed to recent court judgments that resulted in the removal of lawmakers affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party in Plateau State from the national assembly.

The convener of CMBG, Ben Omale, characterized the legal actions as orchestrated by “closet fascists” with the sinister intent of establishing a one-party dictatorship in the country.

Omale expressed dismay at what he labeled as anti-democratic forces working to destabilize Plateau State and, by extension, the entire nation.

He specifically highlighted the efforts of certain elements within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, who have commended the court rulings as a testament to democracy in action.

The statement partly reads, “What should scare Nigerians and the world at large, gentlemen of the press, is that they plan to implement this playbook in other non-APC states in order for the party to control all the states of the Federation in the next eighteen months. In this, the Middle Belt is particularly endangered because we will bear the brunt of any resulting insecurity from this criminal experiment they are performing with Nigeria’s democracy.”
