Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate has called for a fundamental shift in Nigeria’s political culture, urging leaders to move away from transactional politics and rent-seeking practices in order to effectively tackle Nigeria’s crisis.
Obi made the call on Saturday, February 7, while addressing members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Obidient Movement at a meeting held in Asaba, Delta State, according to a statement he shared on X (formerly Twitter).
He stressed the need for unity across political, ethnic and religious lines, describing the creation of a “new and united Nigeria” as both necessary and achievable if citizens work together toward a common purpose.

“We must transform our politics from a focus on transactions and rent-seeking to one that uses our nation’s resources to create wealth for all citizens,” Obi said, adding that Nigeria should be a country where “a child of nobody can become somebody” through opportunity, not connections.
The former Anambra State governor noted that Nigeria’s current realities demand collective action, calling for national unity that cuts across all regions, from the North to the South and from the East to the West.
He further emphasised the need for competent and compassionate leadership, arguing that only leaders with capacity and commitment can deliver good governance and restore public trust.
According to Obi, such leadership must make the welfare of citizens a priority by decisively addressing security, poverty, education, healthcare and hunger, which he described as some of the most urgent issues facing the nation.
He urged political actors and supporters alike to see themselves as one family committed to rebuilding Nigeria for the benefit of all its people.
“We must unite for the shared purpose of establishing competent leadership that possesses the capacity, compassion, and commitment necessary to ensure good governance,” Obi added.
