Nigeria Ranks Second Best in Mental Health in Africa Despite Economic Hardship

Nigeria has recently been ranked second in Africa for having the best mental well-being, surpassing Zimbabwe, while Tanzania secured the top spot.

This revelation stems from the fourth annual ‘Mental State of the World’ report released in March 2024 by the Global Mind Project, conducted by Sapien Labs.

The report also highlights a global decline in mental well-being since the onset of the pandemic.

Despite this positive ranking, Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, particularly highlighted by the high cost of living.

These challenges have been exacerbated by policy changes such as the removal of subsidies on petrol and the unification of exchange rate windows, as announced by Bola Tinubu in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

Sapien Labs compiled data from over 500,000 individuals across 71 nations throughout the year, covering nine geographic regions, including Africa.

The report evaluates mental well-being using six layered scores, which include temperament and outlook, social self, drive and motivation, resilience and strength, awareness, and mind-body connection.
